Dubai UAE Day #1

Sunday, November 11th

Our day started with a 1/2 day city tour of Dubai that I arranged through Best Shore Trips.

This was a fascinating tour through the city of Dubai, also referred to as the "City of Gold". We explored the contrast between the past and present. The journey began at the magnificent Jumerirah Mosque which is the largest mosque in Dubai. It is the only mosque in Dubai which is open to non-muslims. Unfortunately, the mosque was not opened so we could not visit.

We then drove on the Jemeirah beach road and stop for photographs at the Burj Al Arab (Arab Tower) Hotel. WOW!!!!

We drove out on Palm Jumeirah which is probably the most famous landmark in Dubai. It is a series of artificial islands created in the form of a palm tree. The main attraction on the island is the Atlantis Hotel.

Next stop was at the amazing Dubai Mall that seems to have every high end store known to man! Also, an aquarium....

We walked thru the mall and out the back door to see the the Burj Khalifa in all it's glory...it is the tallest building in the world. I really had wanted to go up in it but unfortunately, there was not enough time.

Then it was on to the Abra station, where we took an Abra (water taxi) to cross to the opposite side of the creek, as was the way of travel in the not too distant past.

We then walked through the bustling alleys of the spice and gold souks (markets).

....then back to the Solstice to rest up for our desert safari....
